Despite the yearly preparations against Dengue, the number of individuals afflicted continues to increase. According to the Dengue Surveillance Report of the Department of Health (DOH)-National Epidemiology Center, from January 1 to August 18 last year, a total of 80,745 cases of Dengue has been recorded, about 14.14 percent higher compared to the same period in the previous year, which was 70,745 cases.
The NEC also said the number of dengue patients who perished also rose from 424 last year to 496. The department said the mostly victimizes children, aged 1 to 10, and teenagers.
Enrique R. Alberto, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Philippine Life Financial Assurance Corp., explained that while preventive measures are important in eradicating Dengue, many people still die from Dengue due to the lack or even absence of immediate medical given to those infected.
