Blood donors who traveled to Mexico on vacation may be turned away | cleveland.com

In February, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revised its judgment on how likely it is for people who have vacationed in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo — which includes the popular vacation destinations of Cancun, Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen — to contract malaria. Malaria is a blood-borne disease and the parasite that causes it can be passed along in donated blood.

While malaria risk has been long recognized in some western and rural central parts of the country, the tourist areas to the east, particularly Cancun, had been deemed largely free of the disease.
